[The following work is selected from 300 New Chinese Poems (1917-2012), a Chinese-English college reader published by Poetry Pacific Press in October 2013.] Qin Zihao:: Pursuit The setting sun in the sea Solemn and stirring like heroes’ sighs A heart runs to it Towards where the horizon lies The sea wind in the dark night Blowing with yellow sand In the endless night A valiant soul Riding on the time-steed grand At Hualian Port, August, 1950 The Existence of Bottle Purifying the zeal of sense organs and subliming it to naught, adept to response Inhaling all breaths and sounds inside it, and turning it into rhythms A stout belly Easy and free A stout belly As if sitting, and as if standing Sitting in a Zen meditation, and standing in a Buddhist stance As if backward, and as if forward Against abyss and toward void Against void and toward abyss Against all, you are in oblivion Toward all You observe in all directions Not a plain, but a cube Not a square, but a round, corresponding all directions Accommodating response, and accommodating visibility It is an axle, with gravity and the radiation of light A stout belly Waking in a catnap, and catnapping in a wake Stationary motion of ego and the motionlessness and un-stationariness of non-ego Existing in affirmation, and existing in negation Not accidental, no shape Not theological, no creed It is a being, a still being, an esthetic being And esthetics forms from images, visible and tangible but uncertain images It is an existence of another world It is an order of dream , an order of mixing Classics, symbols, cubes, trans-realism and abstraction Coming from the Creator’s perceptual design Displaying in the shapes chaotically clear and abstractly concrete Existing in the nudity and clarity of thinking Catnapping for seven days, waking for a thousand years Catnapping for a thousand years, gathering the visions of ten thousand years Turning chaos into clarity, and turning clarity into vagueness Stars and the sun in the atmosphere of the universe Graceful, and simple as before New light, fresh as before Still as it is, clear as it is, and chaotic as it is, Each inch is light Each inch is beauty No need for excuse No need for disguise Forest-like the numerous stars Shining by night, hiding by day In the broad daylight of no stars The sun is the dominator Profound and vast the blue heaven Where hide infinite riches The void being is in your belly It is an improbable naught The exuviations of chrysalis, the blooming and withering of flowers Butterflies spreading their wings, sunflowers throwing their seeds They evolve, transmute, endlessly recycle? Or the burst and passage of a laughter are in an instant? Instant linking instant Then there are sunrise and sunset, time in change, and time is still time You hold the entirety of time And house the loneliness of a universe In eternal motionlessness, you breathe the void Composed as unity, free as unity, and easy as unity You settle in unity Setting unity in lonely variances Inseparable Indecomposable — Stillness after great understanding — Existence after great nirvana A stout belly Easy and free The universe houses you And you conceive a universe in your belly The universe exists because of you About the author: Qin Zihao (1912—1963), originally named Qin Ji, was born in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province.
