The former UK health minister Stephen Dorrell is to join KPMG as a consultant. Its extraordinary how, in his many years as an MP, Dorrell didnt once raise his voice about about KPMGs nefarious activities, including its pivotal role in tax avoidance, the $456 fine it paid for facilitating tax evasion, the imprisonment of some of its personnel for fraud, its knowingly misleading audits of corrupt Edinburgh-based bank HBOS in 2001-08, or no less disastrous audits of The Co-operative Bank. Nor indeed did Mr Dorrell once question the clean bill of health that KPMG gave to a whole host of other failed and fraudulent financial institutions around the world in the months prior to their failures, including the likes of UK mortgage bank Bradford & Bingley, Countrywide (USA), Hypo Real Estate (Germany), Fannie Mae (US), Fortis (Belgium), New Century Financial (USA) or Wachovia (USA). Nor, indeed, did Dorrell ever dare to question the rampant conflicts of interests that characterise KPMGs business model. Nor did he question anything that this and other members of the so-called Big Four accountancy firms got up to, including the promotion of PFI and PPP even though these are self evidently deleterious to the livelihoods and wellbeing of billions of people. Of course not. To have done so might have jeopardised his chances of getting a consultancy role there on leaving the Commons. h/t Prem Sikka
