The fortress-like seed coat of the hemi-parasitic Castilleja coccinea Indian paintbrush, Castilleja coccinea (L.) Sprengel (Scrophulariaceae), Indian paintbrush, is a small to intermediate-sized, terrestrial, hemiparasitic, flowering herb that grows in bogs, open wet meadows and open woods with moist, sub-acid to alkaline sandy soils across the eastern half of the United States. Indian paintbrush is a root hemiparasite, deriving part of its nourishment from the tissues of its host species through haustorial root connections and also producing some photosynthates autonomously. Like other members of this genus, C. coccinea can form haustoria with a variety of host species and does not appear to exhibit a great deal of host specificity. lsprings.ddns.uark.edu/aas/issues/1984v38/v38a20.pdf hortsci.ashspublications.org/content/25/9/1100.2.short phytoneuron.net/2014Phytoneuron/14PhytoN-Castillejacoccinea.pdf nanps.org/index.php/gardening/native-plants-to-know/111-indian-paintbrush-volume-8-issue-1 inhs.uiuc.edu/~kenr/prairieplants.C.html images.library.wisc.edu/EcoNatRes/EFacs/NAPC/NAPC02/reference/econatres.napc02.jzimmerman.pdf davesgarden/guides/pf/go/54751/#b
