The fourth of five Preston High Athletic Hall of Fame recipients is Bob Knight. Bob Knight Coach – Basketball, Football, and Baseball Robert (Bob) Knight is known as the “dean of coaches” in Preston County. He has coached football and basketball in seven different decades and baseball in three decades. As a coach at Preston, Central Preston, West Preston, and Kingwood High Schools he has been involved in 440 football games, 802 basketball games and 216 baseball games. This adds up for a grand total of 1458 games. Bob’s background in athletics started at Kingwood High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He furthered his education at West Virginia University. He played one year of baseball for the Mountaineers. After graduation, he accepted a position at Kingwood High School as a teacher and coach. Bob remained in Preston County for his entire 31 year career. During this time period, he served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, athletic trainer, assistant coach, and coach. When Preston High opened in 1991, Bob was on Brad Metheny’s first Preston High Football staff as an assistant. The Knights made the state playoffs under Metheny for the first time in 1995. Bob remained as an assistant coach through the 2007 season. During this 18 year time period, the Knights were led by six different head coaches, but the only person on the sidelines the entire time was Bob Knight. Bob also served an assistant coach to one of his former players, Mark McCarty, on the inaugural baseball team at Preston High (1992). Bruce Huggins took over the program after the 1992 season. With the exception of the 1995 season, Huggins and Knight coached together on the diamond through the 1996 campaign. Bob joined Barry Sander’s basketball staff the year after Preston High opened (1992-1993). Along with assistant coach, Gene King, the trio worked together for over 20 years. During their tenure, the Knights compiled 236 wins and 190 losses (55% wins, 45% losses). They won nine sectional championships, three regional championships, and went to the state tournament three times (1997, 2005, 2008). Bob wrote nine articles dealing with sports that were published in national magazines. The football articles were published in Gridiron Strategies and the basketball articles were in the pages of Winning Hoops. Coach Knight has interviewed countless Preston High coaches for the radio station WFSP. Bob was recognized by the WVSSAC as the Retired Coach of the Year in 2012. His award was presented to him on the floor of Charleston Civic Center Coliseum by his son Scott Knight. Coach Knight lives in Kingwood with his wife Pat.
