The freedom of the press provision of the Bill of Rights gives newspapers, magazines and other publications the right to print factual stories on whatever they see fit, controversial or conventional, without interference from the government. The framers found the concept so important that they placed alongside freedom of speech, religion and assembly: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
