The friend who posted this commented that she would never again question the price of hand dyed silks. Its a step, but there is a long walk to true understanding among the population. Cheap Chinese manufacturing has had a devastating effect on artisans around the world. This design, on the surface, took a few minutes to create, if we are to discount the years of training, errors and experience. Approaching my design process as impressionist art through beads, words, and energies, I can create, at most 50 designs per year and they develop over weeks, months and occasionally years. With this as a reality base, since this isnt a whimsical hobby, I dont have patrons swarming around me, or an indulgent husband to ensure safe passage and an abundance of supplies and financing for promotion, logically I should charge a reasonable weeks salary for each design to avoid the inevitable alternative reality. Clearly I dont, but few are willing to accept the uncomfortable reality that one of a kind art (wearable, or in any other form) is worthy of a fair exchange of energy in a form that plays well in this very material economy. We love praise and positive feedback, but its not yet included in acceptable financial exchanges. Cash, checks, credit, wire transfers, and all sorts of electronic funny money can play, but no one accepts praise as payment. When youre shopping for special gifts through the holidays and the coming year, think behind the object that entices you. Is there a human pouring their heart, soul and life blood into the end product, or some bright, shiny soulless chunk of whatever, that means little and probably helps no one.
