The funeral was beautiful...my mother, brother and I arrived at 9:15 to say goodbye to Dad..his casket was draped with the American flag, and his picture was beautifully displayed on a column next to the casket. Mom looked beautiful (her friend Joyce had stopped by and helped her colour her hair and fix it for her), and she was a tower of strength during the entire service. Ive never seen anyone have so much courage during such a painful time in their lives. I went to the funeral director and asked if he could find Stranger on the Shore by Mr Acker Bilk to play at the beginning of the service (this was the song my mom and dad fell in love to). He recorded it off of his mp3 player and at 11:00 am, it came over the speakers. She lit up with such a smile. The eulogy was touching, remembering my father and the history of his growing up. We all headed for the cemetery, and half way there my car died. My cousin Sean jumped out and gave me a jump, then it died again and would not promptly start. He gave me a ride to the cemetery where we were greeted by two cadets in full military uniform. They removed the flag from Dads casket, folded it, and honourably presented to my mother, then the young female cadet played TAPS. We returned to my parents house for the reception, where my cousin Sean went out and bought me a brand new battery so I could get my car home. I offered to pay him back, but he refused, saying, This is what family does. I was deeply touched, Turns out it was the alternator, and my brother in law Marion offered to pay for the part and came out from Dayton to replace in (in the afternoon rain). A heartfelt thank you to Marion, Darlene and my BFF Larry for helping me yesterday with the car. I cannot thank everyone who showed up for the funeral. Your kindness and words were so moving and loving. His coworkers from GM regaled stories of Dad singing to them while on the assembly line. my old neighbors from the trailer park came (Mary and Clarence Bunch, thank you for coming), as did so many others from Dads elementary and high school days. My assistant manager at work even showed up to check up on me. All in all, it was a sad day to say goodbye to my father, but the beauty of the ceremony, and the love that was shown to our family will never be forgotten.
