The future lies ahead of you – not behind you. Genesis 19:12-29 (Sodom and Gomorrah is Destroyed) … 14So Lot … said to his sons-in-law…, “Up, get out of this place; for the Lord is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting. 15When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Get up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or else you will be consumed in the punishment of the city.” 16But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and left him outside the city. 17…, they said, “Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the Plain; flee to the hills, or else you will be consumed.” … 24Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven; … 26But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. One way we vainly elevate ourselves over God is to get stuck reminiscing about past glory days; that may not have been so glorious. For example, even though Sodom and Gomorrah wasn’t the “nicest” place to live, Lot’s family had put down roots and enjoyed some successes there. His daughters had married locals, and Lot’s life got noticed by Abraham. So even in such a bad place, they were making a go of it, and they were hesitant to leave; even knowing it was going to be destroyed. But the time to embrace a new future was upon them. When creating something new, some people miss their opportunity by wallowing in the past. Even if they were leaving Sodom and Gomorrah, they get stuck reminiscing about the good times: The food, the conveniences, the friends they had, … . The reality is, time is always, ruthlessly destroying our past. If we do not flee to the future, we will be consumed by the destruction raining down on our past. If we wallow in our past, if we are slow to embrace the future God has given us, we might as well be a pillar of salt. Don’t look back. Flee to the future God is giving you, and enjoy His blessings in that new future. Just a thought. All views on today’s reading are welcome.
