The future of communities lies in their ability to self-govern, Transition Towns is a movement that aims to get people involved and create a better society. It’s evident that the mainstream political parties are not going to support our communities in the coming years, cut-backs, privatisation and centralised policy decision-making highlights only a small part of the issue. Localism is part of the future, but it isn’t the Localism that Conservatives talk of, it’s the Localism of the people, it’s Social Localism. Social movements like the Transition Network and social movement organisations such as the Schumacher Institute can go far but they will require the help of councillors to bolster their action if they want to dominate the local sphere. England needs a new party, to support the transition from State and transnational companies control to communities where individuals work towards the preservation and creation of well-being.
