The gallery artists of the week are Edison Zapata and Romina Gonzales! Zapata and Gonzales’ work can be viewed in our current show, texture&tension. Edison Zapata has experienced dislocation and reassimilation all his life. A native Colombian born in Venezuela, he moved to Australia as a young child and then again to Japan to become a culinary artist. A perpetual foreigner juggling three different languages, Zapata was sensitive to the “nature of failed communications...the imprecise transfer of information between people from different walks of life.” In the gallery, Zapata’s Fused Pantalla, or Fused Screen, is an example of this--funneling and diluting light so that it heavily pixelates the environment behind it, presenting the viewer with an opaque, uninterpretable window. Zapata’s collaborator, Romina Gonzales, makes subversive yet fragile pieces, such as Collapsing Cylinders, which are daintily crumpled and folded vases. Gonzales uses her traditional art education from Lima, Peru, New York University, and Kent State University to break her own learned social conventions, which is what Zapata forced to do with each reintegration into a new culture. Together, Zapata and Gonzales have wedded their techniques to create art that skirts the rules of glassmaking to create odd forms. They created OFFCENTRE at UrbanGlass Gallery, an exhibit that approaches “making with naivety and reckless experimental abandon...Off-center, in glassblowing vocabulary, refers to a shape displaced from its axis and is considered a fault that needs immediate solution.” Through raw instinct and exploration, they collaborated on the Fractured Series, a blown glass works that exploits what would traditionally be considered crucial mistakes to create a radical aesthetic entirely their own. Zapata and Gonzales’ work is available in the gallery! Please contact us for more information. morganglassgallery/artists/gonzales_zapata.htm
