The geniuses in tatters The grave opens The saint crawls out And he reckons ‘I am no saint, You gave me a title so immaculate for my head, I was a liar, gay lover, and as ambitious as you’ The ashes recollect From the sea into the urn And the hero rambles ‘I am no hero, You gave me a title so celestial for my head, I was a rogue with followers, and the media loved me unlike you’ The monument collapses And below it, the philosopher emerges And he mumbles ‘I am no philosopher, You gave me a title so congested for my head, I was prone to the same mistakes and folly that befall you’ The earth succumbing to drought cracks And the great poet emerges And he announces ‘I am not a true poet, Those rhymes that gave light I scribbled in the dark, I was misled to mislead you that I have accessed the truth’
