The geological formation known as the Marin Headlands was created - TopicsExpress

The geological formation known as the Marin Headlands was created by oceanic sediments (i.e., graywacke sandstone, radiolarian chert, serpentinite, pillow basalts and shale) migrating to the North American Plate from the Pacific Plate in the Los Angeles region over 100 million years ago. Erosion and construction during the military era exposed some vivid examples of these rock types, and the folding caused by tectonic action is visible in many areas throughout the Headlands. The formation in this photograph is called pillow lava.
