The gift of rain! An early season front has passed through most of the SF Bay Area. The front was enhanced late last night by a jet streak resulting in precip totals that far exceeded forecasts, especially south of the Golden Gate. SF Downtown, SFO and OAK all exceeded 0.40 and SJC has 0.36. The rain winner in the SF Bay Area this time was the Santa Cruz Mountains where most spots received well over 0.50 and some gauges are nearly 0.80. The front is now approaching Tahoe and the Northern Sierra and models are trending wetter, which is great news for fire suppression efforts on the King Fire (precip total ranges through Sunday have been bumped up from 0.1-0.25 to 0.50-1.00). On Friday and into the weekend, a trailing low will move over central CA producing the first snow of the season in the Sierra high country above 9-10k from Tahoe to Sequoia. Right now totals look mostly light except for the northern Yosemite/Hoover Wilderness area (and possibly Tioga/Cathedral Range) where proximity to the best dynamics combined with the higher elevation could give several inches of snow. Regardless, this will be a cold, windy and winter-like weekend in the High Sierra. As is typical with early season fronts, we go back to sunny and dry conditions early next week, but hoping for many more rain events this winter!
