The golden calf in the book of Exodus, was not meant to depict a false god, but was a depiction of the God up there in the mountain. They made up for His absence, by creating an idol that they could dance around. In our moments of ambiguity, where God seems absent or silent, it is tempting to find a substitute to fill in the gaps. An honest discussion with the real God beats a fictitious relationship with a man-made proxy for God, but what kinds of proxies are there?
