The governance crisis in Nakuru County has taken a new turn after Governor Kinuthia Mbugua revoked the appointment of six people to the county executive committee. The move was confirmed in the latest edition of the Kenya Gazette and comes against a backdrop of complaints by residents about poor service delivery by the county government. Residents of Nakuru have grown increasingly impatient with the delay by the county government to fulfill its promises while elected officials squabble over positions. On Thursday, more than 100 angry residents who had camped at the governor’s office, nearly caused a stampede when they were unable to see him after waiting for hours. According to a notice pinned on the entrance to the governor’s office, Thursdays are normally reserved for the residents to present their grievances. Some of the angry residents even tried to storm the governor’s office, but were denied entry by guards. County secretary Joseph Motari, who is one of the governor’s appointees rejected by members of County Assembly, is still in office and was forced to intervene to cool rising tempers. “The governor is ready to see you, but he has had a busy schedule today, please bear with him,” said Mr Motari, as he was shouted down by the angry residents. Four of the county executive members who were given a clean bill of health by the County Assembly were forced to come out of their offices to address the residents. However, pleas by Mr Maina Kairu (Roads), Richard Rop (Water), Francis Mathea (Finance) and Samuel Gitau (Tourism) fell on deaf ears as the residents shouted them down and demanded to be addressed by the governor.
