The government has been giving seed and Fertilisers to smallholder farmers since 2003. However, productivity has marginally improved from 1.2Mt/ha to around 2Mt/ha. At the current maize prices, one cannot break even. To break even and make some marginal profits, one should be aiming at producing over 4Mt/ha. What do you think the farmers and government should do to make at least over 70 percent of the smallholder produce over 4Mt/ha?
