The government’s investigation into generic-drug pricing just - TopicsExpress

The government’s investigation into generic-drug pricing just got a bit broader, as the Justice Department is turning its all-seeing eye onto it. Even better, you might be able to help. (More on that in a moment.) We’ve told you before how two U.S. congressmen — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD) — had started and were leading an investigation into the sudden spike in prices of generics. And those two got interested after Connecticut’s attorney general launched his investigation into digoxin price hikes. Now the DoJ is involved. It’s issued subpoenas to two generic drug makers, looking to see how those companies work with competitors. (Can you say “anti-trust”?) And it’s apparently convened a grand jury as well, according to generic drug maker Impax Laboratories, which reported that one of its sales reps was subpoenaed to testify. Here’s how you can help. Sanders’s and Cummings’s offices have asked the National Community Pharmacists Association for help compiling examples and anecdotes of how generic price increases have impacted patient care (e.g., forcing patients to forgo their medication). If you know of any instances where a sudden, unexplained price hike of a generic affected a patient, you can call or e-mail NCPA’s Michael Tomberlin at (571) 882-3308 or [email protected]. We’ll keep you updated on the investigation. In the meantime, read more over at the Wall Street Journal: on.wsj/1BhOMw3
