The grandson of an old and wise grandfather, came to him with anger and hate towards a friend who hurt him and did him wrong. The grandfather responded by telling him a story… “I too, at times, have felt great hate for those who have taken much from me, with no regret of what they did or how it hurt me. But harmful emotions wear you down and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing the other person would die. I like you, struggle with these feelings and have experienced them in life, many times. Yet I have learned, “There are two wolves inside of me. One is good, full of love and life. He is joy, peace, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. He lives in peace and harmony with everyone around him. He does not lash out and attack in anger. He only fights to protect himself from harm and to protect others in the right way. But the other wolf is evil, full of fear and death. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The smallest thing will set him off into a fit of rage. He fights everyone, all of the time, for no good reason. He cannot think clearly, because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing. Sometimes it is hard to live with these two wolves inside of me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit. The same struggle is going on inside of you, and inside of every other person, too. The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”. The old and wise Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.” Which wolf are you feeding with your thoughts and feelings? Which master are you serving? Most likely, as you read these words, there is a fight going on inside of you between those same two wolves. You can kill the wolf that contains all that anger, sorrow, regret, and resentment by embracing the good wolf and choosing love, gratitude, compassion and forgiveness.
