The great Clark Gable died on this date 53 years ago, in 1961, of a massive heart attack that many say was brought on by his insistence on doing his own stunt work in his last, and in my opinion his best movie, The Misfits. He collapsed and died less than two weeks after finishing the movie. Gable was one of the greatest of Hollywoods automotive enthusiasts, owning a long succession of fine automobiles from Duesenbergs and Packards through Jaguars and Mercedes Benzes in his later years, and he was a regular attendee at the Indianapolis 500. Quite a fellow; quite a life. :-)
