The great Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky died on Aug 6th 1976. One of the greatest cellists ever, he performed chamber music with Rubinstein and Heifetz - known as the "million dollar trio." From 1941 to 1949, he was head of the cello department at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and he taught at Tanglewood, Boston University, and the University of Southern California, where he remained until his death. The USC established the Piatigorsky Chair of Violoncello in 1974 to honor Piatigorsky. Two wonderful books relate his anecdotes Cellist and Gregor Piatigorsky: The Life and Career of the Virtuoso Cellist. Here he is in an amusing video playing Bach Bourees from the C major Suite for solo cello of Bach. interlude.hk
