The great con: Save Our Street. We have been here before and are here again. The same old dinosaurs are stirring once more in Sydney to put a stop to a promised North-South cycleway that will run through the heart of the city and link to connections onwards. At last the beginning of a city-wide cycling network has been emerging. Alas, this is how the so-called Save our Street backers put it: Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, is about to ram a double-lane cement-bordered cycleway through one of our city’s main arteries – Castlereagh Street... Businesses will be strangled and as a consequence jobs lost all along this major city artery. Like her College Street cycleway white elephant, it’s unknown how many cyclists will actually use this monstrosity and whether the enormous cost would ever be justified. All this just to realise the Lord Mayor’s green utopia...What possible benefits will come from this – the Lord Mayor has a lousy track record with her other cycleways. They forgot to mention that the Castreagh Street cycleway was actually the States idea as it gave them a way to close down College Street cycleway which has been a fixation of the Minister Duncan Gay. While we have seen how the rest of the world has moved on to embrace cycling as part of a modern cityscape, we continue our struggle street by street here. Each time we begin to believe things have improved we see that the struggle is far from over and there are no guarantees improvements could not be reversed. The ACP will be joining with others to look at countering well orchestrated media blitz by ensuring everyone knows that next years elections look to be close and the ACP will be standing candidates and preferencing those who support cycleway development. More on a counter strategy to the SOS campaign soon.
