The handsome, young man on the left is Charles Dickey. He was the nephew of Hattie Dickey who married my grand-uncle Bert Mansfield of the Lincoln Community. This was taken at the rock house under construction where Hattie and Bert lived. The house is still there - many people know it well. I believe this photo was taken in the late 1930s. My dad helped on this house also. On Charles’ WWII draft registration, he listed as his civilian position – actor. It turns out, there is an interesting story that included him, which I have recently turned up. I found it in a 2008 Homecoming program for the Lincoln United Methodist Church. This church was established in 1883. By 1938, the old reed pump organ was grunting and groaning so much, that the organist was just tuckered out trying to play it. Her dream was a new piano. This is a story of a dream come true. A group of young people – which included Charles Dickey and 11 others – form the “Little Theater Group”. They went on the road with their show, performing a comedy play called “Silas Smidge from Turnip Ridge, County Clay in Iowa”. They hit several schools in Lincoln County and went as far as Walnut Grove, AL. The last show at Walnut Grove High had an overflowing crowd, with people sitting on the stairs and on the stair rails. This theater group used most of their profits to buy a good piano and presented to this church in 1938. In 2008, this piano was moved to the Lincoln Community Center.
