The hard part of digesting the Adrian Peterson story is that we all know inherently that spanking a child is violent and, thus, wrong. But many of us were spanked as a child. So having the opinion that Adrian Peterson did wrong and perhaps even broke the law is subconsciously accusing our parents of the same. Certainly, there are degrees at play, but violence is violence and there is always a better way. I dont consider the spankings I received to be abuse. But thats likely because our society at one point told us it wasnt. By definition, it was. No, it doesnt mean my mother or stepfather didnt love me, didnt care for me or didnt want what was best for me. It means they were lulled into believing bad behavior was acceptable. To continue to say spare the rod and spoil the child and dismiss corporal punishment as acceptable is simply encouraging violence against your own children. And thats a hell of a lot more definition and fact than my opinion.
