The haze has two interlinked dimensions-environmental and political. Both need to be solved equally and diplomatically. From environmental perspective, it is straight forward. There is land burning. The burning involves huge primary and secondary forest system, vast track of cultivatable land and kampong land. Primary reason to burn hundred hectares of land is to clear land in quickest way and affordably cheaper and oftentimes for free for replanting purposes for example. However, burning land this way is ecologically disruptive, , environmentally destructive and health hazardous to all. But, to agro-company corporate people this can be arranged to escape accountability. Their corporate lawyers can massage this and settling out of court is one of their winnable legal "way-out". It is damn clear haze is man-made calamity. It has nothing to do with forest system to "clean or sanitize" themselves to improve natural soil fertility, land productivity or weeding out undesirable elements. Haze is a calculated business for profit strategy made in the boardroom. Farmers do not do such high risk calculation. The only time farmers are involved is when they are being used, duped and tricked to do land burning as "house cleaning" proxy to mega agri-business interests. Who have the gut to strategically “manufacturing” mega haze? Farmers, absolutely no way. So, who then? Your guess is as good as mine- those who have direct interest in estate agriculture. Plantation management always have direct link to corporate greed and maximization of profit. These two are interconnected. I deliberately exclude the manufacturing of industrial haze. Industrial haze or smog and land haze are of two different nature and origin. Recent “Greater Beijing Beltway’ haze blanketed part of Northeast China is a good example of industrial haze/smog that run wild due to industrial policy failure or bureaucratic negligence on the part of the ruling Communist China party.
