The headline for this review on CNET is Media box is like VLC for your TV. How much of a nerd do you have to be to understand that headline? About as much as me, I guess, because it got me reading despite the fact that I have toys lying all over my apartment that can play various video and music formats. But nothing will play everything. Except VLC. VLC is a famous app (mine is Windows based but I would be surprised if there werent Apple and Unix versions). It plays digital media and I have not yet found anything that wouldnt play-- except for the occasional bad file. Even VLC has a crucial weakness. If you point it at a folder it will figure out how to play the contents but not without some scary looking messages about stuff it cant read, the non-video and non-music stuff. So not even VLC is perfect. Is this tiny box perfect? Maybe.
