The healing effects dogs have reach beyond just military members. Twenty-year old Benjamin Gray, the son of Sarah Gray (member of the CNS Veterans’ Support Committee), was diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) two years ago after numerous hockey-related concussions. His condition was exacerbated by the delivery of this diagnosis and what it meant for his future career in hockey. Benjamin experienced post-traumatic stress symptoms, going through bouts of depression, anger and anxiety. “While the journey is far from over, I have been making big strides. What helped me the most, aside from my family and friends, was my dog, Sky, my parents gave me when it all happened,” explained Benjamin. Medric reached out to Benjamin in 2012 when he read his story in the local newspaper. Benjamin said, “He offered his service dog knowledge and any assistance we needed to make application to this type of medical need. When I heard my mom’s company was going to donate to Paws Fur Thought, I said ‘Count me in!’” Ben, too, made a contribution at the presentation on Monday, indicating that, “part of my journey to wellness is paying it forward.”
