The health department at LHS in 1958 - Doris Smith and Mrs Casey. I remember the hearing and eyesight tests. Ms. Smith would run you through a wide range of frequencies on her magic audio box and you would swear you could hear each one - you would say yes to every setting to make yourself seem like a super hero. The red apple test was always a quandry. You would look into the viewer on her table and you would see an image of a family having a picnic with food all about. An illuminated red circle represented the magical red apple. Ms. Smith would ask you Eddie, is the apple on the table, or on the grass? You looked with your left eye and see the apple on the table; with the right eye, the apple seemed to be on the ground. With both eyes open, the apple seemed to fluctuate between the 2 points. You did not want to give her the wrong answer even though there was NOT a wrong answer - they were looking to see which eye was dominant in short sight. Ms. Smith is still alive and lives in Westport, NY. In my day, Grace Litchfield was our Mrs. Casey. The room was located on the back side of the school, on the second floor, next to the girls locker room over the gymnasium. I am not sure if I ever had a cleaning, or if a checkup was all that was administered. I recall Judy Durney Perkins being an dental assistant, if my memory serves me correctly.
