The heavy rains stopped this morning leaving us with spring air so Atticus and I took to the trails. It was good to have them to ourselves with the only hikers we came face-to-face with were each other. Overhead, high above the trees, even on the mountaintop, the wind roared like passing dragons. On the rare occasion it dipped to greet us it was a reminder that though mild, winter is here. I dont know how many mountains weve climbed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the past nine years but this holiday hike, like all the others, was our favorite. To stand together, then to stand with Atticus sitting in the crook of my elbow so our heads were side-by-side, and our eyes looked off together at distant peaks and valleys, well, this is as good as it gets for us, as good as its always been as we let go of twin sighs. It was a very good day for us. Im hoping it was for you, as well. Merry Christmas, everyone.
