The heel command is something that I teach dogs that come through training. Walking your dog in a proper heel keeps them focused on you, the command they are working on, and less likely to get into trouble. By teaching your dog a solid heel you can communicate and nip most walk problems in the bud (pulling, marking, sniffing, even reactivity) by communicating yes and no through the leash/collar/ecollar. In this video youll see Koda and Khaleesi in heel position, and Koda slip out of it a few times. Position of heel is VERY important to your dog being successful on a walk, and you knowing when to correct the behavior. Most important is marking the break of command with a no then saying heel marked with a yes when they are back to it. Your dog needs to know it messed up and when it made it right! Just saying heel, heel, heel without a no to mark that they actually messed up will ne very confusing for your dog. Think of it along the same principle as why you dont repeat sit..sit...sit or down...down...Fluffy down... multiple times when teaching other commands. Here are some kind of rough examples: 1. Fluffy, sit. (She sits) Yes! (Maybe food reward or verbal/physical praise) 2. Fluffy, sit. (Fluffy does not sit). No, sit. (With correction) Yes. (When she does sit, but no food or heavy praise). 3. (Fluffy gets up from sit without being released) No. (With correction) then Yes. (When goes back to sit, but no food or heavy praise) Keep it simple for your dogs, and youll find them responding quicker and more accurately. Marking the right and wrong behavior is huge for the learning process--they need your feedback! :)
