The history of great battles is written by the survivors. In the case of Gettysburg, the best example of this is what happened with Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine. As the accounts of the defense of Little Round Top, most of them written by Chamberlain himself, make clear, Chamberlain and his men acquitted themselves with great courage, even heroism. Yet other men whose roles heroically defending Little Round Top were much more important, killed in action, never received the public acclaim afforded the self-promoting Chamberlain and his tiny unit. Among those men were: Lt. Charles Edward Hazlett, Strong Vincent, Paddy ORorke, and Stephen Weed. As Professor Allen C. Guelzo notes in his recent book, Gettysburg: The Last Invasion, Credit for defending it [Little Round Top] belongs primarily to Gouverneur Warren, Strong Vincent, and Patrick ORorke, and only after them to Chamberlain.
