The hit and run incident this morning in Fairhope has prompted me to make this post. First prayers for the injured cyclist and his family. Second, most people do not realize that the Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage of their own automobile insurance coverage is available in a hit and run situation. UM coverage allows you to collect all damages you could recover from the uninsured at-fault driver such as medical bills, lost wages, pain & suffering, future damages, etc. under your own policy. Alabama law deems a fleeing motorist or unknown driver as “uninsured” which allows access to the UM coverage. If you’re on your bike, or even a pedestrian, and an uninsured driver causes you injuries, you can access this benefit. If you ride a bike, think about raising your UM coverage the next time your policy renews.
