The holidays are a lot of fun in education because you can take so many fun holiday symbols and incorporate them into learning. Its a little late but heres some fun Halloween examples. 1. Pumpkins: Science exploration talk about how they grow, talk about the parts of a pumpkin, talk about the variety of pumpkins sort them by size, color, and shape; estimate the amount of seeds you reach in and grab; glue seeds on a five or ten frame and use for number sense activities; set up a bowling lane use the pumpkin as the ball subtract the number hit from 10; review basic shapes to cut out a pumpkins face; measure the pumpkins diameter, weight, and volume of the guts; hide letters or sight words in pumpkin guts have students find the letters and identify the name and sound; place the guts in a Ziploc bag practice writing letters or numbers in the pumpkin guts; review color mixing and paint a pumpkin using red and yellow; create a face on the pumpkin label the different facial features; write Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater on sentence strips search for the letter Pp or rhyming words. 2. Monsters: create a monster out of play dough label each monster with a number and kids match number of eyeballs; use toilet paper to wrap students as mummies measure how much wrap it takes to turn a student into a mummy; tape a paper ghost cutout on a stick and blow it out of straw measure how far the ghost travels; use a big foot costume foot to measure different objects in the classroom; create Halloween patterns with different monsters; create a monster house using different shapes; use a marble and black paint to make a spider web on a paper plate use the paper plate to review letter, sight word, or number identification assign each child a letter using flashcards students identify the letter assigned and place the card in their spider web; have students write a potion for witches brew (1 jack-o-lantern smile, 2 bat wings, 3 spider legs); make monster slime out of elmers gel glue, borax,water, and green food color have students practice writing numbers and letters; clap monster names to identify syllables in each monster; teach children the Monster Mash. 3. Candy Corn: review top, middle, bottom using a large candy corn giving directions and asking questions; use candy corn for math manipulatives to estimate, count, add, and subtract; search for letters on candy wrappers; practice letters or sight words by adding flashcards with candy stickers into the flashcards you want to practice student identifies the letters until the candy card is seen the student then says trick or treat and gets a candy.
