The homesman stars tommy lee jones (who also directs the movie) and Hilary swank as well as small apperences from stars like john lithgow , jesses plemons , Tim Blake nelson , James spader and meryl Streep. The story is about a women named Mary b cuddy (Hillary swank) a single woman in 19th century Nebraska who volunteers to transport three women from the area whove all gone insane to Iowa where there to be looked after. Along the way she meets crusty old gezzer George Briggs played by tommy lee jones and he joins her on her trip despite his reservations in order to claim $300. Now this is a movie that did dissapoint me it had a fantastic cast full of top notch talent but yet just turned out to be a clichéd , plain and at times downright boring western. The cinematography was quite beautiful really giving life to the harsh and brutal landscape that has cause these three women to lose there sanity. Yet while theres life in the scenery theres barely any to be found in the story . Hilary swank gives a fine and reasonable performance but her charecter was just so dull and boring part of the story is that no man will marry her cause she is plain and bossy and to be honest I agree with the men on this one and since I found her boring I wasnt invested in the charecter. Much more enjoyable is tommy lee jones as the crust old cowboy , clichéd yes but he fits the role and at points he comes close to saving the film but sadly a heavy handed script and bad dialogue prevents this from happening. Some big names pop up but barely even register with viewers through either lack of caring or lack of screen time it feels like they were only in the movie so that the audience could be like oh I didnt know that person was in this movie but I knew they were in it by the time I saw the movie so there was no surprise. The story is too slowly paced and gose on way too long I felt the last 20 to 25 minutes of the movie were pointless and at one point I was begging for the movie to end. This is a poor mans second rate version of true grit and absolutly pales in comparison to other recent westerns like true grit or django unchained. The only decent things in the movie where the cinematography , tommy lee jones performance at times and james spader whos on screen for about 5 minutes at most but gives us what I can only assume is some kinda of bizarre Irish Scottish hybrid accent. In the end this movie bored me I hope tommy lee jones can direct better than this or else he can stick to acting . The homesman is dull , lifeless , bleak , depressing and way too long full if wasted performances with paper thin charecters and boring storytelling I give the homesman a 2.5 out of 10
