The housing dilemma Theres an emerging paradox that goes something like this. Once upon a time people lived in smaller more humble houses they had either built themselves from materials that lay in the fields and forests, or fixed up or if they were wealthy enough they lived in a castle or a very big house that was probably not much bigger than a medium sized house today. Some people didnt have houses at all but its the same today. Laws were made to make house builders build houses better. New materials were invented to make house building easier and cheaper Buildings became standardised. People became deskilled and regulations got tighter and soon not very many people could build their own house or afford one. Builders profited, Councils, red tape and regulatory bodies thrived, and houses became bigger and more expensive and unbuildable for the average persons skills. Soon the mass of people stopped being able to do much more than bang a nail on the head which is when liquid nails became quite the thing for sticking stuff together. People forgot that they could do quite a good job by themselves and became convinced they couldnt and also wanted more than was necessary. Now there is a housing problem. I dont have a problem. I have built 4 houses mostly by myself without having to go to the bank to pay for it. Im a tiny woman, Im a single Mum with an extremely low income and I found another way to do things. i did it myself or with help with appropriate materials sourced from the earth, the dump and knockdowns. I started small and I grew my houses to fit my needs. I live without inconvenience and I live well but frugally. What we need is another housing model that is more creative and community based, more flexibly regulated, micro housing, multiple occupancies, intentional community and broader allowance for people doing it themselves. Over regulation, taxes and fees and the building industry are killing peoples ability to own their own home.
