The human genome is very complex. It has over three billion letters in its instruction kit that tells the body how to build itself. Adding or deleting a single letter here or there can make a difference not because a single change makes such a difference but because it can throw off the grouping of individuals letters. Our code is based on three letter combinations eachof which forms the equivalent of a word. If you add or delete one single letter, a sequence of words becomes jumbled, not just the single word where the insertion or deletion occurred. The result os that a particular protein doesnt get made which can have devastating effects for the body leading to very serious diseases including cancers. Researchers ahve developed a computer algorithm to help study a given genomic region to detect changes caused by small additions or subtractions of letters. This tool is helping scientists understand the genetic causes of many diseases which could also lead to effective treatments.
