The iconic arch over the Will Rogers Turnpike reopened to the public yesterday after a major renovation. The original plaza was built in 1957 as a pancake house operated by the Howard Johnson hotel chain. Now the 27,000 square foot travel plaza features two restaurants and a convenience store for the 26,000 drivers who pass through it daily. The renovations called for the structure to be taken completely down to the structural steel, only leaving the bridge structure and well-known arch. Transformations include new signature glass windows along the arch, a large seating area and a Will Rogers Tribute area featuring a bronze statue of Rogers. Visitors will also enjoy a 1960s model Corvette sculpture hung from the 22-foot ceiling. Renovations to the renamed Will Rogers Archway were designed by Beck Design and constructed by Timberlake Construction. Wallace Engineering provided structural engineering services. #transformationtuesday
