The idea being encouraged here is comedians are more likely to commit suicide... in the article Dana Gould states he knows 5 friends/fellow comedians who have committed suicide. My question is ..... how many comedians has he met in his long career. Is the percentage any greater than his non-comic friends? I bet the percentage is lower for comedians than most below poverty, part time employed drug users/addicts. Why do comics wish to perpetuate the notion there is a dark side to comedy? Does that make them sound cool? Why do they want to be perceived as tortured souls? You stand in front of people and tell jokes. You want a difficult life... try any other number of occupations that require physical labor in the summer heat? The job isnt physically difficult....and certainly it is less emotionally and intellectually taxing than brain surgery or hostage negotiator. Calm down comedians.... quit trying to be dangerous, dark, mysterious, and intelligent. Some simply cant cope with life....just like many in the non-comedy world.
