The idea for the cover image of Phish 2nd live album was to represent improvisation - taking a theme and running with it - like pick up the musical thread and run with it like relay runners and a baton. The scene was set on a seashore for romantic reasons and appropriateness - the sound of the waves, the sound of the surf, the sound of music, Phish of the sea. The ball of wool, or yarn, is a real sculpture about 15 feet high and transported to a beach at Hengistbury Head in the south of England. It was very heavy and difficult to manoeuvre. The rope is taken at the same place, same lighting but separate time to the runner. The two were joined in the computer and the size of the ball was doubled. (Storm Thorgeson)
