The images from Langata Road of the Police Tear Gassing demonstrating school children are downright disgusting and extremely gross. We cannot have sunk to this low. And before i get any expert input on handling my emotions, i am a parent with school going children too. Kids are kids, they are innocent and cannot warrant such reaction. This clearly unites us across the board. We now not only want to know the alleged grabbers of the playing field but we immediately seek an identification and full reprimand of the specific officers who hurled tear gas at school going kids. Because like they say, only fools dont learn from history. The pictures of a dying 13 year old Hector Pieterson carried by a fellow student in the wake of police crackdown of the Soweto Uprising in 1976 immortalized the young boy to the whole world and rallied a rethinking and refocus of the world on the excesses of the Apartheid regime in South Africa. It was never the same. A Bantu Steve Biko inspired Black Consciousness movement took root. And the winds of change started sweeping across South Africa. If you remember Muoroto, Kibarage and Spring Valley in the 90s, you will have a vivid sense of how these sites of contestantion between the commons and powerful rich land grabbers energized the push for socio-political-economic change. You can sit pretty and talk about activists and roublerousers been behind this and fronting kids. And i will ask you, what is wrong with that. We got a choice to make. Do kids get to keep their playing field or does a high end hotel get a parking lot. I choose the former. But please do remember in your own comfort that it is the small things that touch our hearts and souls that are the most potent drivers of change.
