The importance of good diet Here is Mischief & Sunny. Mischief is the tricoloured Texel, Sunny is her daughter and looks nothing like her mum! Mischief was a free range pig, and was pregnant at around 3 months old.......she was quite unhealthy, matted and skinny when rescued (thanks to Guinea Pig Haven Rescue Shelter in Nth QLD) Due to the lack of good & appropriate food, and neglect, Mischief has never grown much - even at nearly a year old she is only just over 800 grams. Her daughter Sunny was an unexpected but welcomed addition to the family - she was born June 8 2014 and weighed 115gms. She is now 6 months old & weighs 1200 grams. When babies are growing in their mums, all the nutrients needed for them to develop are directed to the babies. So, mum will miss out on much of the goodness so as her babies can grow and survive. This unfortunately means that if the mother is young herself, the food she needs to ensure her own growth continues is limited, effectively stunting her. Mischief will never grow much bigger but she has had a healthy diet for over 6 months so hopefully this will help her bone density & overall health condition. Sunny will never know starvation or neglect and is a perfect example of how a good diet and health management can produce a beautiful healthy & robust pig.
