The increased militarization of our police forces is an issue that needs to be addressed. With access to military hardware and internal language comparing basic patrols to war it is hardly surprising that we are seeing fatal police shootings rather than shooting to disable. Before we can ever hope to address the myriad of issues surrounding police and race relations we have got to make it clear - the Armed Services and the Police force serve two different purposes in our society. When those lines get blurred we find ourselves at a dangerous crossroads. Even within the military those who fight and those who police are separate and distinct roles. If youre concerned for police safety due to guns then work to pass legislation to address illegal guns sales - if youre concerned with police being incorrectly accused of murder then work to get legislation passed that requires dash/body cams for every officer - if youre concerned about your community being equipped to deal with active terrorist threats then work to make sure that the national guard in your state is well staffed and equipped. We have to stop making excuses. We have to remember who we are as a country.
