The independent Match Review Panel (MRP) - consisting of Simon Micallef (Chair), Alan Davidson and Con Diomis – convened today to consider an incident from the Westfield FFA Cup Quarter Final match between Sydney FC and Adelaide United FC (the Match). An incident involving Nikola Petkovic (Sydney FC) occurred in or around the 88th minute of the Match in which he received a direct Red Card. Pursuant to the Westfield FFA Cup 2014 Competition Regulations (Regulations), Football Federation Australia referred the incident to the MRP to determine whether an Obvious Error had occurred. In reviewing the incident, the MRP determined that there was no Obvious Error within the meaning of the Regulations, Obvious Error being ‘a decision by the Referee to.…issue a direct Red Card when no card was warranted….being such a decision that no referee in the possession of all the facts, including all available evidence, could reasonably have been made”. Therefore, the MRP confirmed that Nikola Petkovic will serve the Mandatory Match Suspension of one (1) match. In accordance with the Regulations, Nikola Petkovic is ineligible for Sydney FC’s Hyundai A-League match against Brisbane Roar FC on Friday night.
