The initial aim of these asylums was to help rehabilitate the woman back into society, but in the eartly 1900s, the homes had become increasingly prison like. The inmates were forced to undertake tough physical labor, a lot of time laundry work, and they had to endure long periods of enforced silence. It is believed that up to 30,000 women passed through these places in Ireland, and the last one operating in the state closed as late as September 1996./Dublin
