The invention relates generally to emergency alert systems, and in particular to an Emergency Vehicle Alert (EVA) system. The drivers of ambulances, fire trucks, police cars and other emergency vehicles need the cooperation of other drivers, who are required by law to pull over to the side of the road or otherwise yield the right of way to emergency vehicles. However, drivers often do not cooperate because, despite the use of flashing red lights, emergency vehicles often are not noticed by other drivers. Emergency vehicle drivers are often reluctant to use their loud sirens in residential areas, particularly late at night, and other drivers frequently do not check their rear view mirrors unless they are changing lanes due to ordinary route maneuvering. Even when the siren is used, loud music from the other vehicles audio system can drown out the sound of the siren. The result is that emergency vehicles are frequently delayed in arriving at the scene of an emergency, and are sometimes involved in motor vehicle accidents. These events increase the risk of loss of human life, and damage or other losses to valuable property. Also, at the scene of an emergency incident, personnel on foot are at risk of being struck, and injured or killed, by a vehicle whose driver is unaware of the emergency. An Emergency Vehicle Alert (EVA) system, that would provide an audible and visual warning to other drivers from their dashboards when emergency vehicles are in the area, would substantially reduce these risks by enabling emergency vehicles and personnel to arrive where they are needed as quickly as possible, and would resolve this problem.
