The irony of losing two family members to the same circumstances - TopicsExpress

The irony of losing two family members to the same circumstances is irony that I could have done without in my life. Both Kyle and mom were struck and killed crossing a cross walk. Both just down the road from their house. Both taken by care-flight to the same hospital. Both dead in their 40s - taken way too soon from family and friends that adored them. I thank God for the time I had them, and that I know Ill see them again in heaven, but as a city planner, I ask: Why does road design have to be all about optimizing the speed and route of a car? Why cant we MANDATE that roads are designed to be safe for PEOPLE FIRST? Contact your transportation department - theyll have to admit that pedestrians barely enter the equation with road design. They prioritize cars over people every day. In my moms case they repaved the road and decided not to restripe the crosswalk (but kept the dim crosswalk warning light). Every day decisions can make a huge impact on our daily lives. Lets decide and INSIST that people come first, and how we spend our tax dollars needs to reflect that. I dont care if it costs me an extra 30 seconds or 3 minutes on my commute - Id rather have my loved ones back.
