The island in now in Condition of Readiness 2. If you have not made preparations for the impending tropical storm you should start doing so. According to the National Weather Service Tropical Storm Halong has slowed down and is intensifying. Its closest point of approach is now anticipated at around 11 o’clock Wednesday evening. Guam is under a Typhoon Watch which means destructive winds of 75 miles per hour or more are possible within the next 24 to 48 hours. Maximum sustained winds are now 60 miles per hour. With COR2 being declared this means that all GovGuam non-essential agencies are now closed. Governor Eddie Calvo has also activated the Emergency Operations Center to make sure GovGuam and the military are prepared to keep residents safe. Here’s what you should do to prepare: - Put up your shutters. Please be careful; it’s dark and it’s wet. - Pick up objects that heavy winds can move around your yard, and store them. - Make sure you have your emergency storm kit in a place that’s easy to get to. - Keep a battery-operated radio and batteries on hand. As for emergency shelters they are scheduled to open at 5 o’clock Wednesday morning. The list of shelter sites and guidelines will be released later this evening. Women who are 38 weeks (or more) pregnant, or high-risk pregnant women, can start checking in to GMH tomorrow morning at 7 o’clock. Meanwhile Governor Eddie Calvo may declare the island in Condition of Readiness 1 at around 8 o’clock tomorrow morning if the storm continues on its path. At that time, residents should stay indoors.
