The island of Martinique is a region of France. The biggie history - TopicsExpress

The island of Martinique is a region of France. The biggie history was the volcanic destruction of St. Pierre in 1902. Another interesting history note regards Wmpress Josephine (Marie Josephine Rose Taslerde la Pageire) who rose from relative obscurity to rule the French Empire in the early 1800s along the side her husband Napoleon; he divorced her father 14 years of marriage in favor of the younger Marie Antoinette who could bear him an heir. France originally abolished slavery in 1789; but many say that Josephine talked Napoleon into re-establihing it. Although a statue was erected in her honor after she died.... you will see that the statue was beheaded and red paint for blood was added. Our guide was Christian who was a student exchange student in Martinique from Munich, Germany. One of the sites you see is the smaller replica of Paris Sacre Couer. Besides journeying through a magnificent rainforest, the highlight was visiting the prestigious Depaz Estate; home to Depaz Rhum. Had the opportunity to taste several of agrecol rum made from pure blue sugar cane which is grown and distilled on the premises located at the base of Mount Pelee (thats the volcano that erupted in 1902 killing over thirty thousand people).
