The issue of what is appropriate in terms of political fundraising - TopicsExpress

The issue of what is appropriate in terms of political fundraising activities is often debated in Canada. Our rules are tight - no corporate donations, personal donations are capped at an annual $1200 per person for two baskets; federal parties and EDAs/campaigns/nomination contests. There are strict disclosure requirements in place as well, both in terms of who donates where as well as what political entities spend their resources on. In many ways, this levels the playing field for Canadians to get involved in the political process - you dont need to be a millionaire (or beholden to millionaires) to successfully run for office, as one isnt required to secure huge corporate donations in order to be competitive. In the spirit of this context, the incentive for a donor to give finances to a candidate or party should be to support the election of their choice of candidate, and in doing so the implementation of a policy platform. For these reasons, I think the following is a profoundly bad idea. ottawacitizen/news/politics/the-gargoyle-ndp-mp-finds-resistance-isnt-futile
