The jinns do not have a control over men. They can only inspire man with evil suggestions and make evil seem good but they cannot dominate him. In the pre-Islamic ignorance, the polytheists of Arabia regarded jinns as associates of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, worshiped them and formed exaggerated notions about their powers. Today, people take interest in magic, calling evil spirits, reading and sharing horror stories for fun, etc. While we cannot see the jinns, they can see us. By engaging in such practices, we are doing nothing but encouraging them to use us for their evil goals. A believing person must hold on to the Qur’an and use his time productively. One must recite the adkhar for protection every morning and evening and keep away from indulging in practices that involve jinn. One of the adkhar that the Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam أُعِيذُكَ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِن كُلِّ شَيطَانٍ وَهَامَّة ، وَمِن كُلِّ عَينٍ لَامَّةٍ U’eedhuka bi kalimaat-Allah il-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah “I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous reptile, and from every envious evil eye.” [Bukhari]
