The joint venture between R1 International Ltd (Singapore) and Hwah Yang Agro Industries Sdn Bhd (Sarawak) will see greater pace of development in the local rubber industries. Hwah Yang managing director Wong Nang Yong said: “We will further develop the rubber industry in Sarawak and bring economic development to the local communities.” “We will also share our knowledge and technology with the smallholding plantations and other related parties to improve the product quality and profit margins,” he said after a document-signing ceremony between Hwah Yang Agro Industries and R1 International Industries here on Wednesday. Hwah Yang – founded in 2002, located in Batu 31 along Jalan Kuching-Serian and covering 12 acres of land – is processing SMR20 and SMR10 rubber sheets amounting to about 40,000 tonnes per month. Apart from its factory in Kuching, Hwah Yang also has centres in other regions in Sarawak to collect rubber. These collection centres are mainly in Betong and Sarikei. According to Wong, R1 International with the slogan ‘Serve, Grow, Prosper’, is a global natural rubber market leader and one of the largest rubber companies in the world with eight offices over the globe. Present at the ceremony, R1 International’s CEO and managing director Sandana Dass said: “Sarawak has big potential for rubber. We plan to grow rubber in Sarawak.” He said although during the last two years, the export of rubber from Sarawak had dropped significantly due to low price, he is optimistic of the future of rubber in Sarawak. He said this collaboration would allow R1 International to share technologies and increase profits which in turn would improve the living standard of many in this industry. Senior minister of local government and community development cum Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who was guest of honour at the event, said the joint venture is a milestone for success. “We have land, but we lack the technology and expertise to develop the rubber industry. With R1 International, we could explore the local rubber industry further,” he said. He also pointed out that the key to success is harmonious relations with people and among business rivals. He added that rivals could collaborate and grow instead of try to defeat one another. He also said the government would continue to support the rubber industry as it is one of the most important commodities of Malaysia and it is an industry that has a bright future.
